Recently I read over our mission statement, stated nearly four years ago. In the beginning of the venture there was so much I didn't know about the suffering that the third world goes through everyday. I was rather idealistic and tossed around solutions to people with hardly any thought. There are so many who have no options at all. They seem to have been born into this world with only one responsibility, and that is to suffer without cause. On the flip side I have seen and felt abundance with the craving for more. I have at times felt so entitled to it that the slightest displacement would send me into a fit. How can a loving God allow both situations to coexist? Unless he is calling the greater to serve the lesser in a very serious way.
"We must so they can" is not an organization, it’s not a church, it’s not even an NGO. So what is it? It’s just a few christians trying to love people the way Jesus commanded us to. If that means giving a hungry man a piece of bread and fish then we strive to do that. If it means getting on our knees and praying for the sick then we do that. If it means giving an orphan a hug and giving up our careers to replace the family they lost then we do that. In all our efforts to meet peoples physical needs we strive to bring people the living water Jesus spoke of because what good is it to stop at satisfying a man’s thirst.
Winston Churchill once said “Somewhere along the way, we will have opportunities to advance ourselves or keep ourselves out of trouble by going along with something wrong or by being silent in the face of injustice.” I often wonder what it would look like if all people resisted the temptation to advance themselves and truly pour themselves out for the benefit of others. In my short time on earth I’ve observed a few things that really disgust me to the point of righteous anger. They are; the poor being neglected, our wastefulness as humans, and people’s dreams to do amazing things for God being crippled by fear, rendering them powerless.
The Bible says “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." This scripture among others has inspired us to be doers instead of talkers. The site is only a window into the journey, It's a call to do something.
I Leave with two movie qoutes that shook me out of appathy, they are as follows.
Oskar Schindler: I could have got more out. I could have got more. I don't know. If I'd just... I could have got more.
Itzhak Stern: Oskar, there are eleven hundred people who are alive because of you. Look at them.
Itzhak Stern: You did so much.
Oskar Schindler: I could have gotten one more person... and I didn't! And I... I didn't!
Warren Schmidt: Relatively soon, I will die. Maybe in 20 years, maybe tomorrow, it doesn't matter. Once I am dead and everyone who knew me dies too, it will be as though I never existed. What difference has my life made to anyone. None that I can think of. None at all.
Day in an day out sitting in my cubical these thoughts plauged my heart. Inside us all there is a deep desire to make impact. My prayer is that the site stirs you to make yours.
